When my research led me to this 1862 short story, “Our Best Bedroom,” I was surprised by how good it was, how compelling and rich with detail, with a layered narrative alluding to the harms of industrial capitalism. I vowed to bring the story to a wider audience. The author is listed as anonymous, but most likely it was copublisher Robert Chambers, who wrote many of the articles in London’s Chambers’s Journal.
